1French Chimneys [Prop Pack] — Steam Workshop
Just like plugins, mods are extremely popular amongst server owners. However, mods are a bit more complex than plugins as they can be client-side only, server-side only, or both, depending on the mod.
- Client-side only means that the mod is to be installed on each player’s Minecraft client, as opposed to the Minecraft server. Some popular client-side only mods include Optifine, Shaders, and Damage Indicators. When client-side only mods are installed onto a server, this can actually cause the server to crash, not start at all, or not run as it should.
- Server-side only means that the mod is intended for use on the Minecraft server only and should not be installed on the player’s Minecraft client. One of the most popular server-side mods out there, as an example, is Biomes O’ Plenty.
- The rest of the modding world is full of mods that are required both server and client-side. If the mod is on the server, but not the client, you won’t be able to connect to the server in question. Likewise, if the mod exists on the client but not the server, you might get mod rejections. The same error can appear if one or the other (client or server) has the wrong mod version installed. This happens most often with modpacks.
- A modpack is a pack of mods, as opposed to just a singular mod. Modpacks are often used to bring a whole new level of gaming to Minecraft and many different modpacks offer different features and options. Some popular modpacks out there include SkyFactory 2.5, Tekkit, and HermitPack, though there are thousands of modpacks out there for several different versions of Minecraft.
Note: Mods are not compatible with vanilla Minecraft. You must be running Forge in order to run mods on your Minecraft server. If you are looking to run a modpack, Forge should be included with the pack already. If you are switching from vanilla/Spigot/etc. to Forge, be sure to create a new world before you make the switch. Attempting to run mods on a non-modded world can cause server errors and/or world corruption.
Likewise, if you plan to swap from modded to non-modded, you will need to add a new world.

Ready to get started? Follow the steps below:
- Log into your Prisma account here: https://prisma.cubedhost.com/login
- Once you have logged in, select the server you wish to add mods to.
- Select the “Stop” button and wait for your server status to show as “Stopped”.
- Before you go any further, be aware… If you’re experimenting with new mods or ones you’re unfamiliar with, we encourage you to back up your server before you proceed. Some mods are broken and may cause issues on your server. While we do have backups available, our automated system currently runs three per day and you may lose progress if a mod corrupts your server.
- If you’re ready to proceed, you may continue by following the appropriate set of directions below…
To install individual mods:
- After you have completed steps 1-5 shown above and your server is running the appropriate version of Forge for the mods you wish to add, navigate to your File Manager within Prisma (CUSTOMIZE > FILE MANAGER).
- Open your “mods” folder.
- Either drag and drop each individual mod file to the folder OR use the “Upload’ feature towards the top-right of the panel. 4. Once you have uploaded each of the mods you’d like to the server, you should be good to go!
To install a modpack manually (e.g. custom modpacks):
- After you have completed steps 1-5 shown above, connect to your server’s FTP using FileZilla or a third-party file manager of your choice.
- Once you have connected to your server’s FTP, delete the following folders: jar, mods, config, libraries
- If your modpack server download is zipped, unzip it now.
- Within the unzipped file, locate your JAR files and move them to a single “jar” folder. NOTE: If you don't see a JAR file named
minecraft-server.1.X.X.jar
, you might need to run an install script to download the file. These files are usually named something along the lines ofInstall.bat
orInstall.sh
, but it can vary based on where the modpack was downloaded. - Upload the contents of your modpack’s folder onto your server (do not drop the modpack folder itself onto your server).
- Wait for the upload to fully complete. It is important that you do not attempt to modify/start/restart your server while you are uploading files.
- Once the upload is fully complete, start your server.
- Your server should have started successfully with the new modpack installed. Please note that it can sometimes take a few minutes for the modpack to install before your server will fully start and show as online. Be patient, you’ll be mining soon!
